  New York Old and New
Everything changes in New York after 9/11. If you’re going to be thinking, New Yorker always thinking big. A jazz center starts up in Lincoln Center, a Freedom Tower will rise near where the Twin Towers fell. Yet the old is better than ever: Lady Liberty remains green; the Greek diner take-out coffee cups stay blue; and the little lighthouse under the George Washington Bridge is, of course, still red. The Bronx is still north and the Battery south. New York is still a helluva town.
Shopping
Madison Avenue power shopper is theater and luxury. The stores represent the best brands in the world. As flagships, the retailers pour everything into them. From 57th Street to 81st you’ll find whatever you like: jewelry, chocolate, cosmetics, all the major designers. Wear your running shoes on Madison Ave because it’s walk, walk, walk and shop, shop, shop.”
Financial District
Strike gold in the Financial District. You can’t tour the Stock Exchange anymore, but the Federal Reserve gives a tour where you go down into gold vaults. There are bars and bars of gold. It feels like the movie National Treasure.
New York is still center of the capitalist world.

Mr Bo told reporters “Chinese people have a saying if you respect me by an inch, I’ll respect you by a foot”

English Study Plan ,

Dear Alumnus,

We were accidentally talking about learning English together on the web at last web party. There is quick response with warm support from our web friends at once. Many suggestions have been made, e.g. 'One sentence of a day' and 'Chinese-English translation comparisons' etc. Owing to the limit of the ability and experience we had, please allow us for some time before we set up a study program. We will do our best and try to do a good job. Thank you for your kind assistance.

'Tales of two big cities'
(Little tale).

(Honeymoon.
Do you prefer some drinks ?(你想要点饮料吗?)
空姐再问Are you sure?
Thank you!
Do you want some drink?(你要点饮料吗)
Yes. What do you have?(要,你有什么饮品?)
A bottle of spring water please .( 我要一瓶矿泉水 )
A moment please. I will be back to you soon.(
You mean you do want something to drink?(
Yes,Yes !
What would you like?we have Orange juice, spring water, soda, tea and coffee.
Orange
于是鼓起勇气说:Orange( 橙?).
YES
Orange juice。 Thank you!

                                     Home work   功课  5  26

             Home work direction

   Education Systems in the UK

Education systems in the UK have evolved over hundreds of years, and are subject to rigorous quality standards. Here's how it works.

Education in the UK is compulsory for everyone between the ages of five and sixteen, and is provided by two kinds of schools: state-funded schools and independent (fee-charging) schools. The UK has two distinct systems of courses and qualifications: one for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and one for Scotland, each compatible with the other.

Pre-school or pre-preparatory education

Pre-school education is available in both the independent and the state systems. Many children start their education at the age of three or four at a nursery school or in the nursery class at a primary school.

Preparatory education

In the independent system, preparatory (or primary) education is available for children aged five to thirteen. Many international students enter at the age of seven, often as boarders, and then transfer to a secondary school in the independent system when they are either eleven or thirteen.

Primary education

Most UK children enter the state education system when they go to primary school at the age of five and generally move to secondary school or college at the age of eleven.

Secondary education (including GCSEs and equivalents)

All UK secondary schools, both state and independent, teach pupils at least until the age of sixteen and prepare them for GCSEs or equivalent qualifications. Significant numbers of international students enter the UK secondary education system when they are either eleven or thirteen. Many attend independent boarding schools.

Nobody can change New Yorkers
New Yorkers are always in haste. In the morning, they try to get into the elevator as quickly as possible. Even when they are driving, they try to catch up with the traffic lights. They get in the subway at the last minute and they usually cross the streets without watching the walking signs. People and the cars do not go with each other. This makes the city streets a very risky situation. The Mayor put forward his politics of election as "highest quality of life". One day he put 50 police officers on the 42nd street, a very busy street, to watch people crossing the street. They issued tickets to 3000 people for violating one old city law: Crossing streets at a red light, making it an unsafe situation. Nobody took this law seriously before. All 3000 people went to the court for hearing and they filled up the entire place, causing the court house to stop regular business. The city chief judge was forced to announce that all tickets were cancelled and no penalty would be made. On the news that night, the newsman pointed the camera to the busy 42nd street and those who continued to cross without looking at the walk sign. And he said: "They are New Yorkers. Nobody can change them."
